Switching to Avalara two years ago felt like a relief at first. The platform we left was clunky, poorly documented, and our returns process was a manual slog every quarter. Avalara's integration with our ERP was the main selling point, and honestly, that part delivered. Setup took a few weeks with their implementation team, the sync with our accounting system works reliably, and AvaTax handles multi-state rate lookups without me having to babysit every transaction. CertCapture is also genuinely useful once you get exemption certificates organized and flowing through it. Coming from a system where we were tracking those in a shared drive, that alone felt like progress.
But two years in, the shine has worn off in places. Support is my biggest frustration. Tickets go into a queue and the response time is inconsistent, sometimes days for something that's blocking a filing deadline. The pricing structure has also crept up on us. We added a few new states and the cost jumped more than I expected for what felt like a marginal increase in volume. The Returns module works, but navigating the filing calendar and exception reports takes longer than it should. The UI has improved but still has corners that feel like they haven't been touched in years.
If you're coming from a truly broken legacy system, Avalara will feel like a step forward. If you're evaluating it against other modern compliance platforms, go in with clear questions about support SLAs and pricing tiers as you scale. It covers the core compliance needs for a mid-size operation, but it's not without rough edges.
