Switching cloud providers mid-growth is exactly as painful as everyone warns you it will be. We came off a provider that kept nickel-and-diming us with surprise bandwidth charges, and the contrast with Rackspace has been pretty stark. A year in, I can say the migration headache was absolutely worth it. Their support team answered real questions from real engineers, not scripted deflections, and that mattered a lot when my small infrastructure crew was trying to stand up new environments without breaking anything in production.
The managed cloud side is where Rackspace earns its keep. Configuration help, proactive monitoring alerts, the fact that someone picks up the phone at 2am and knows what they're talking about. For a startup at our stage, that feels like having a senior sysadmin on retainer. Uptime has been solid across the board. The MyRackspace portal isn't the slickest interface you'll ever use, but it gets the job done once you learn where everything lives.
My one real gripe is the time it takes to provision certain resources. Compared to the self-serve speed of some hyperscalers, there's a bit more back-and-forth involved. If you're used to spinning up instances in two clicks, the process here can feel slower, especially early on. Worth it for the support quality, in my opinion, but it's something to plan around. If you're running a lean team and you've been burned by cloud bills that make no sense, Rackspace is worth a serious look.
