Time-off management in this space is usually an afterthought. Most tools bolt on a leave tracker and call it done. What sold me on Freshteam three years ago, and what still impresses me today, is how deeply they've built out the time-off module. I can configure multiple leave policies side by side, set accrual rules that actually reflect how our education nonprofit operates, and the manager approval workflow just runs quietly in the background without me chasing anyone. The reports are genuinely useful too. Absenteeism trends, upcoming leave snapshots, team views versus org-wide views, all in one place and readable without a manual.
For a small nonprofit HR team (it's basically me and one part-time colleague), that depth matters enormously. I don't have the bandwidth to stitch together spreadsheets and email threads. The employee self-service piece has been a particular relief. Staff raise their own requests, managers approve or decline, and I only get pulled in when something unusual comes up. Three years on, this module alone justifies the subscription for us.
